Production inference engine with an OpenAI compatible API: one model per installation, served on NVIDIA GPU hosts (tensor parallelism on several GPUs of a host, Ray pipeline parallelism across hosts) or on CPU hosts (x86 AVX512 or AVX2 build). Model weights are hosted on the host (Hugging Face cache or imported folders), never downloaded at start in offline mode. Registered automatically in LiteLLM.

Packages and artifacts
A package the project of the service publishes (its image, its binary archive, its Python or OS package) carries the licence of the service; a third-party package carries the licence written on its row, read from the official upstream metadata.
| Kind | Package | Version | Licence | Details |
|---|
| container image | docker.io/vllm/vllm-openai | v0.33.0 | Apache-2.0 | image key vllm, used by server, ray-worker, digest sha256:d825baf9ce4b1b6bfc5ecc7b79880c7e6748c65a72d697ce3d47607aafa84c6e |
| container image | docker.io/vllm/vllm-openai-cpu | v0.33.0-x86_64 | Apache-2.0 | image key vllm_cpu, used by server, ray-worker, digest sha256:4154467a886f8b7ffa9dbab32f873f5ca4528409d042a6ec866e8888223263d3 |
Images are pinned by tag in the descriptor, and by digest when the descriptor declares one (the offline bundle then refuses a pulled image that does not carry it); the digest is recorded in the mirror of the Manager when the offline bundle is imported, and every pull or load is checked against it.
Supported systems and architectures
| Method | Operating systems | Architectures |
|---|
podman | RHEL family (dnf), Debian family (apt), Arch Linux (pacman) | x86_64, aarch64 (not restricted by the descriptor) |
Certified host systems: RHEL 8/9/10, Rocky Linux 8/9/10, AlmaLinux 8/9/10, Oracle Linux 8/9, CentOS Stream 9/10, Ubuntu 22.04/24.04, Debian 12, Arch Linux (rolling). The host preflight accepts these systems (other releases of a known family give a warning, end of life releases are refused) and the x86_64 and aarch64 architectures.
GPU: NVIDIA GPU given to the component as CDI devices (nvidia.com/gpu): server (when the configuration asks for it), ray-worker (when the configuration asks for it).
Prerequisites
Host
- at least 8192 MB of memory (blocking,
memory).
- at least 1 NVIDIA GPU with 8000 MB of memory, only when
accelerator is gpu (blocking, gpu).
- at least 8 CPU, only when
accelerator is cpu (warning, cpu_cores).
- the program
podman installed on the host (blocking, podman).
- at least 51200 MB free for
/var/lib/navin (warning, model_disk).
Programs the commands and checks of the service start on the host, outside the managed roots: add them to allowed_commands of the agent (see Security of the Navin agent), else the agent refuses them with command_not_allowed: /usr/bin/nvidia-smi, /usr/bin/podman.

Services and connections needed
This service has no dependency.
Installation methods and modes
| Method | Default | What the method uses |
|---|
podman | yes | the container images of the descriptor, run by Podman under systemd |
Components
| Component | Kind | Installation methods | Ports |
|---|
vLLM server (server) | master | podman | 8000/tcp, 6379/tcp, 6381-6382/tcp, 20000-20199/tcp |
Ray worker (ray-worker) | worker | podman | 6381-6382/tcp, 20000-20199/tcp |
Single instance (sandbox) (single) (default)
One engine on one CPU or GPU host.
What the mode deploys:
| Component | Placement |
|---|
server | min 1, max 1 |
ray-worker | not used |
Replicated (high availability) (replicated)
Independent instances of the same model on distinct hosts; LiteLLM balances, retries and fails over between them.
What the mode deploys:
| Component | Placement |
|---|
server | min 2, recommended 2 |
ray-worker | not used |
Multi node (large model) (distributed)
One large model split across GPU hosts with Ray (pipeline parallelism): one server host and Ray worker hosts. Not high availability by itself.
What the mode deploys:
| Component | Placement |
|---|
server | min 1, max 1 |
ray-worker | min 1, recommended 1 |
Install this service
The install wizard of the Navin Manager plans, validates and runs the installation; you need the services:install permission on the cluster.
-
Open the wizard. In Clusters, choose the row action Install services of the target cluster. The wizard opens on its first step, Service.
-
Choose the service. On the Service step, select vLLM. The card shows the licence Apache-2.0.
-
Choose the hosts and the mode. On the Hosts step, tick the hosts, then choose the Mode: single (default), replicated, distributed. Each mode deploys the components listed in Installation methods and modes. With several components, place each one on its hosts in Component placement (Suggest placement proposes a placement that respects the cardinalities).
-
Bindings. This service has no dependency: the Bindings step has nothing to bind.
-
Configure. On the Configure step, review the parameters (see Configuration parameters); the required ones are model. Passwords left empty with a generated default are generated and sealed by the Manager.
-
Review and install. On the Install step the Manager validates the plan and shows the installation order; when it says "The plan is valid. Ready to install.", choose Install. A highly available mode is installed only when its HA checks pass.
-
Verify. The operation ends when the health checks of every instance pass (see Health checks); the service then shows as running in Services.

| Health check | /health |
| Authentication method | Fields | Description |
|---|

High availability
Prerequisites
| Prerequisite | Must be highly available | Modes | Description |
|---|
| litellm | yes | replicated | Highly available LiteLLM (two proxies or more): it balances, retries and fails over between the replicas; agents and applications never call vLLM directly. |
Topology per mode
| Modes | Highest catalog level | Distribution | Quorum component | Fault domains | Description |
|---|
single | standalone (standalone) | single (single) | - | 1 | One engine on one CPU or GPU host, no fault tolerance. |
replicated | ha (ha) | active-active (active-active) | - | 2 | Independent replicas of the same model on distinct hosts, each with its own GPUs and its own copy of the weights; LiteLLM fails over between them. |
distributed | standalone (standalone) | single (single) | - | 1 | One large model split across GPU hosts with Ray: every host is needed and the loss of one stops the model. |
Notes
- Splitting a model across GPUs or hosts is not high availability: a critical model needs the replicated mode, or a second independent installation under the same served model name behind LiteLLM.
- The TLS parameter protects the OpenAI compatible API of the server (with /health, /metrics and /docs). The Ray ports of the distributed mode (head, node manager, object manager and worker ports) and the NCCL traffic between the pipeline stages stay in clear text: keep the hosts of the distributed mode on a trusted internal network. The /docs page loads Swagger UI from a public CDN: on a host without Internet add --enable-offline-docs to extra_args.
